Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, in Long Beach, CA. Her aunt Denise inspired her love of the arts and her creative side. Her aunt worked the night shift as a nurse, so she could follow her passion for theater and art throughout the day. DuVernay quickly was captivated after showing her that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay learned that art is a great instrument for social activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially conscious and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay was a child together with her parents in Compton, spent each summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by her summers in Selma to later direct the documentary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. In the year 1990, she graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood, California. DuVernay was in college when she became attracted to the field of production for broadcast journalism. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to watch and search the home for a specific member of the Jury. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied with journalism so she decided to shift her focus towards the industry of public relations. DuVernay got a job right from college, working as a new publicist at a studio. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
